RUSSIAN GRAMMAR

PREPOSITION “О/ОБ/ОБО” (ABOUT) + PREPOSITIONAL CASE

The preposition "о", which requires the prepositional case, is often used with verbs of thought in Russian. This preposition also has variants "об" and "обо", the use of which occurs according to the following rules:

“о” is used in front of consonants and the sound [й] (i.d. in front of the initial “е”, “ё”, “ю”, “я”):

−      о рабо́те – about work

−      о еде́ – about food

−      о я́блоке – about the apple

“об” is used in front of vowels:

−      об о́тпуске – about the vacation

−      об актёре – about the actor

−      об э́том – about this

“обо” is used in front of certain consonant clusters, but for practical needs it's enough to memorize the following explressions, where “обо” is mandatory:

−      обо мне – about me

−      обо всех – about everyone

−      обо всём – about everything

about whom? – о ком?

about what? – о чём?
