Verb Conjugation: Verbs Ending with -ать, -ять.

The majority of Russian verbs ending in -ать, -ять form the present tense in the following way:
1. we should remove the ending -ть:
де́лать → де́ла-
гуля́ть → гуля́-

2. then we should add the following endings:

я	-ю
ты	-ешь
он / она́ / оно́	-ет
мы	-ем
вы	-ете
они́	-ют

3. the stress stays on the same syllable that in the infinitive:

	де́лать to do/make	гуля́ть to walk
я	де́лаю	гуля́ю
ты	де́лаешь	гуля́ешь
он / она́ / оно́	де́лает	гуля́ет
мы	де́лаем	гуля́ем
вы	де́лаете	гуля́ете
они́	де́лают	гуля́ют

Some verbs ending in -ать change the stress. These changes are examined here:

EXERCISE:
How would you say in Russian:

1. My sister often thinks of you.
   – often – ча́сто
   – of you / about you – о тебе́
   
2. My parents don’t let me play computer games.
   – me – мне
   – computer games – компью́терные и́гры
   – to play computer games – игра́ть в компью́терные и́гры
   
3. You have been walking for 2 hours.
   – for 2 hours – два часа́ / уже́ два часа́
   
4. I work as a taxi driver.
   – taxi driver – такси́ст
   – as a taxi driver – такси́стом
   
5. We are listening to music.
   – music – му́зыка
   – listen to music – слу́шать му́зыку
   
6. Friends, why aren’t you answering me?
   – friends – друзья́
   – why – почему́
   – me – мне

EXERCISE 1:

• узнава́ть – pattern “b” (because ends in -ава́ть)
• по́мнить – pattern “a” (because the infinitive is not stressed on the last syllable)
• моло́ть – pattern “c” (because ends with -о́ть)
• пока́зывать – pattern “a” (because ends in -ивать)

ты существу́ешь
он/она́/оно́ существу́ет
мы существу́ем
вы существу́ете
они́ существу́ют

• МЫТЬ (TO WASH):
- the 1st conjugation: the endings are -ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ют
- pattern “a”: all endings are unstressed:
я мо́ю
ты мо́ешь
он/она́/оно́ мо́ет
мы мо́ем
вы мо́ете
они́ мо́ют

• КРИЧА́ТЬ (TO SHOUT):
- the 2nd conjugation: the endings are -у (after the hushing consonant Ч), -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат (after the hushing consonant Ш)
- pattern “b”: all endings are stressed:
я кричу́
ты кричи́шь
он/она́/оно́ кричи́т
мы кричи́м
вы кричи́те
они́ крича́т

• ПЕТЬ (TO SING):
- pattern “b”: all endings are stressed
- the 1st conjugation: the endings are -ю, -ёшь, -ёт, -ём, -ёте, -ют:
я пою́
ты поёшь
он/она́/оно́ поёт
мы поём
вы поёте
они́ пою́т

• РАСТИ́ (TO GROW):
- pattern “b”: all endings are stressed
- the 1st conjugation: the endings are -ю, -ёшь, -ёт, -ём, -ёте, -ют:
я расту́
ты растёшь
он/она́/оно́ растёт
мы растём
вы растёте
они́ расту́т

• ИСКА́ТЬ (TO SEARCH):
- the 1st conjugation: the endings are -у (after the hushing consonant Щ), -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут (after the hushing consonant Щ)
- pattern “c”: only in the 1st person singular (“я”) the ending in stressed:
я ищу́
ты и́щешь
он/она́/оно́ и́щет
мы и́щем
вы и́щете
они́ и́щут

• ДЕРЖА́ТЬ (TO HOLD):
- the 2nd conjugation: the endings are -у (after the hushing consonant Ж), -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат (after the hushing consonant Ж)
- pattern “c”: only in the 1st person singular (“я”) the ending in stressed:
я держу́
ты де́ржишь
он/она́/оно́ де́ржит
мы де́ржим
вы де́ржите
они́ де́ржат

• СЛУЖИ́ТЬ (TO SERVE):
- the 2nd conjugation: the endings are -у (after the hushing consonant Ж), -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат (after the hushing consonant Ж)
- pattern “c”: only in the 1st person singular (“я”) the ending in stressed:
я служу́
ты слу́жишь
он/она́/оно́ слу́жит
